EkolectricXperience in Westland

Accenda is verhuisd:

Team Development

After a long radio silence there is much to tell about the Ekolectric. The first Ekolectric has had several test-drives, in which the speed of the car increased each time. Sadly, but very proudly, the team has said goodbye to some of the first Ekolectric team. We would like to thank Miguel, Nikos, Riccardo, Stijn and Trent tremendously for their contributions to the development of the Ekolectric. In upcoming weeks we hope to announce a renewed team able to continue on the work done by the aforementioned students.

We are also proud to announce that Centurion Akku has joint the Ekolectric team. Centurion Akku is developing the battery pack for the Ekolectric, with their contributions the development of the car has reached a new phase.

Furthermore, the Ekolectric had her pré-introduction to the public at the Ecomobiel fair at the 9&10th of October. Accenda and the Ekolectric were present at the stands of the Technical Universiteit and the municipality of Delft

Hogeschool Rotterdam

We are also happy to announce that the Hogeschool Rotterdam (HRO) started actively participating in the project. Contrary to the project in Delft, the HRO will focus on converting a Citroen C1 into a fully electric car. They will be using the results already obtained by the TU Delft team. In addition to this, another team of the HRO will engage themselves in the installation- protocols of transforming second hand petrol cars in to Ekolectrics.

Start Your Engines

The photos in this newsletter show that the Ekolectric is shaping up nicely. The definitive electric motor has been installed in the Smart. The team is currently working on the torque control of the motor.

Last week a reporter of TU Delta, the weekly journal of the TU Delft http://www.delta.tudelft.nl , came by to make a short movie about the Ekolectric project. The movie was shot at the 3ME location near the Smart and in the office of Accenda. You can find the result on

Rabobank

We are proud to announce that an well-known Dutch bank, the Rabobank, has agreed to become involved with the Ekolectric. The Rabobank is willing to support the Ekolectric project, which will open new possibilities for the project as a whole. We are very happy with their commitment.

Municipality of Delft

The moment has arrived; an alderman (“wethouder”) of the municipality of Delft is visiting the Ekolectric in the next few weeks. She will take a tour of the facilities and the team will inform he about the results obtained so far.

Back on Track

The new year has begun and it is time for a new newsletter. 2012 will be the year of the Ekolectric. Everyone on the team has refuelled themselves, not with petrol but with brand new ideas. In short, we are back on track.

Some significant changes have taken place in the past few weeks. The Ekolectric car has been moved from the Dream Hall to the 3ME faculty building with help of the DUT Racing Team. The Ekolectric now resides near the office of Accenda. The photo below shows the car in its new location. Students of the Haagsche Hogeschool have completed their work on the Ekolectric and greatly contributed with the suspension of the motor.

The motor has been successfully installed in the prototype at the TU Delft. And there is more good news... the team has been able to have the wheels spinning! Students of the Mondriaan will shortly start to build in the motor in the prototype at the location in The Hague. Furthermore, the new motor that will be used in the final Ekolectric car and prototype is arriving this week and will be ready to be installed.

On another note, the styling of the first Ekolectric car has begun at the Mondriaan, as show the photos above. The stickers have been printed and arrived, so that they can be placed on the car when the paintjob has been completed.

Shifting Gears

We are nearing the end of 2011 and this is a good time to give you an update of the current state of affairs of the ekolectric. At the end of November the IO students gave presentations to fellow students to conclude their participation in the project. Early December students of the Haagsche Hogeschool entered the project and have been working actively with both the Energy Club and Mondriaan students.

Past week a representative of the municipality of Delft paid the workshop in the Dream Hall a visit. He was pleasantly surprised by the progress our team had made on the ekolectric. He was particularly impressed with all the work that had been done. At the moment the connection between the accelerator and the frequency controller (VFD) has been realized, and so has the shifting gear mechanism for 80%, only certain fine-tuning remains. The breaking and steering is in place, but some work still has to be done on the pump. Last few days the first adapter plate has been fabricated and the suspension of the car will be for 90% finished at the end of 2011. Currently, a closer look is given to the HMI-dashboard control with regard to electrical driving and the battery system is given a closer look.

Publicity

An article about the ekolectric project and Accenda has recently been published in Breen magazine. Breen is a student magazine solely focused on the engineering students in Delft. A copy can be obtained at most TU Delft faculties and the online version is also available at: http://www.breenmagazine.nl/upload/o- breen5_2011.pdf p13.

In January an alderman (“wethouder”) will visit the Dream Hall to observe the first edition of the car and the progress that has been made thus far. Moreover, the website for the ekolectric (www.ekolectric.nl) is currently being developed and is expected to be online in January.

In Second Gear

This issue of Ekolectric News informs you about some of the events that have happened in the past weeks and pays special attention to two teams. The cars have been disassembled and the teams are analysing the different parts, and hope to run tests soon. Sadly, the IO automotive students will finish their minor at the end of this week, but the Mondriaan, Haagsche Hogeschool and Energy Club students will continue their work with even more enthusiasm.

On Friday 11 November everyone was invited to have a couple of drinks in the Aula. Despite the exam week the evening was a success. Last week, all students from the TU Delft were invited to have a look at the location at the Mondriaan in The Hague. This was a great experience; many students came and together with the Mondriaan students they disassembled parts of the cars and managed to run some tests on them. This week the roles were reversed; the Mondriaan students visited the TU Delft Dreamhall, after attending a useful seminar by the RDW. The RDW oversees safety and environment standards and the official testing of vehicles. They have a special department for electric cars, and informed the students of the particular tests they run.

Up and Running

It has been three weeks since the kick-off of the Ekolectric at the IO faculty. It was a bit of a shaky start, but now all teams are up and running. Students from the Mondriaan have joined one week after the TUD students and this week the Haagsche Hogeschool students will be added to the teams. By now, all teams are familiar with both workplaces, the Dream Hall and Mondriaan. However, the planning of the teams over the two locations is not easy. In this week’s newsletter we pay special attention to the drivetrain and styling teams, and there is a summary of the article published in the local newspaper about the Ekolectric..

The photo above is from the publication in the Stadskrant Delft on the 26th of October (page 8), a brief summary is given below:
Ekolectric: a unique formula

Increasingly more companies are focusing on electric transportation on the road. Accenda is cooperating with about sixty MBO-, HBO- and TU Delft students to execute a new concept: the Ekolectric. This concept project focuses on a standard module to convert smaller fuel cars into full-electric cars. The collaboration between students of different technical backgrounds is unique to this project. The link between knowledge and practice is the ideal mix for achieving innovative solutions. The final selection is based on performance, pricing, safety and recyclability. The project is facilitated by the municipality of Delft
